A late payment you actually made on time is one of the most fixable errors on a credit report — and one of the most expensive to leave alone, because payment history is about 35% of your credit score. Here is the exact process, in the order that works now.
Step 1: Confirm it's really wrong
Pull your reports from all three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Find the late payment on each one and check the details: the date, the amount, and whether the account is even yours. A late mark reported by one bureau may be correct on another, so dispute bureau by bureau.
Step 2: Gather your proof
Bank statements, payment confirmations, or a letter from the creditor showing the payment posted on time. The stronger your paper trail, the harder your dispute is to wave off. Keep copies of everything — never send your only originals.
Step 3: Dispute directly with the bureau — in writing
This order matters more than ever. The CFPB now checks whether you disputed with the credit bureau first; a complaint filed before a direct dispute — or while that dispute is still fresh — can be discontinued. So: write to the bureau reporting the error, state clearly what is wrong and what should change, attach your proof, and keep your receipts (mailing confirmations, dates, copies).
Dispute with the company that reported the item too — the furnisher has its own duty to investigate.
Step 4: Wait for the investigation — then read the answer
Bureaus generally have about 30–45 days to investigate. When the result comes back, read it line by line. If the late payment is corrected, confirm the fix appears on your report. If it comes back "verified" but you have proof it's wrong, you can dispute again with your documentation — and a finished dispute that still isn't fixed is exactly when a CFPB complaint becomes your power move.
Step 5: Protect the streak going forward
Set autopay for at least the minimum on every account. One new late payment can undo months of repair work.
When to get help
You can run every step above yourself — plenty of people do. If your reports have more than a stray error, or a dispute comes back verified with your proof ignored, that's where a repair team earns its keep: unlimited dispute rounds, every month, in writing, with the paper trail kept for you.

FAQ
How long does a late-payment dispute take? Investigations generally run about 30–45 days from when the bureau receives your dispute.
Should I file a CFPB complaint first? No. Dispute directly with the bureau first; the CFPB route works after that dispute is finished or 45+ days old.
Can a correct late payment be removed? An accurate late payment generally can't be disputed away — but a goodwill request to the creditor sometimes works, and time plus on-time payments reduce its weight.
